2006 Action

MUS: Greg Jones (L) vs CBHS: David Cash (R) face off in the second annual St Michael's Cup Exhibition Duel (2006).

On February 3, 2006, during halftime at a packed CBHS vs MUS basketball game, two opposing warriors met on the court to capture the St. Michael’s Cup. David Cash of Christian Brothers High School, the current holder of the St. Michael’s Cup, faced off against the challenger, Greg Jones of Memphis University School.

Refereed by local fencing ref Larry Chism, the match was a basic 5 point Electric Epee bout in which the goal is to “hit the other fencer and not get hit.” The target area in Epee is the entire body: from mask to feet. One point is scored at a time.

During a tense ten minutes of attack/counterattack, several fast and furious exchanges were made by both competitors. David Cash attained the lead early on. 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3, and finally Cash scored the final touch resulting in a 5 - 3 victory over Jones, allowing CBHS to keep possession of the St. Michael’s Cup.

Christian Brothers High School Fencing Club Sponsor, Dr. Durant Fleming, “Last year, David won in front of an MUS crowd. The pressure and intensity is a bit more when it’s in front of your own school! I’m extremely proud of him!”

CBHS Fencing Coach Tom Knowles had this to say: “David was somewhat tense going into this - especially in front of his friends and teachers. But I wasn’t worried: this isn’t the first time he has won this encounter. I just tried to get him to relax and take his time. It worked!”

Congratulations to both fencers for meeting in front of large crowds and giving their all!
